Ironically, many of the things that most define your style are probably too large to easily carry about, but given the opportunity you would prefer to be seen surrounded by boiler engines, gear-driven calculators, and incredible automata. Of all the steampunk fashion styles, you place the greatest emphasis on technological accessories, and you are the most likely to create elaborate gadgets that are as much a part of your outfit as your clothes. You probably have goggles, but unlike most people you consider them to be for more than decoration. Whereas most people might look odd carrying a satchel of tools around, for you they may well be essential. Above all, you remind everyone that what sets the genre apart from Victoriana is simply the level of technology.

Try our other Steampunk test here.

Take The Steampunk Style Test at HelloQuizzy

You might remember him from his comic book career, or perhaps his string of blockbuster movies. Either way, he is picking out some classic films for TCM.

Check it out >>

Take 2 steps back

Those of you who know me know that I'm not normally one to complain about these things, but it really does strike me that ConAgra (parent company for Healthy Choice) has taken a couple of steps back. Their latest marketing campaign for Asian cuisine feels like it came out of the 70's when such racist portrayals were common. I really don't think that they (or for that matter their advertising company) realize just how insulting their campaign is.

Take a look for yourself >>

And here I thought we had gotten past these stupid caricatures.

Thanks to my DW crinklequirk for pointing this out.

Vote early and often!

A little while back, my DW decided to participate in a contest over at Jim Hines' livejournal. Essentially, Jim is asking for people to submit images of various people/critters holding his books. The prize is an advanced reader copy of his new book "The Stepsister Scheme."

Well, she spent lots of time doing a photo shoot and working on background images, and I think she came up with a really good entry.

So, go to the polls and vote for her Batman entry. (Okay, you can vote for other people's entries too, but make sure you vote for hers!)

Anyway, here is the link:

And for those who LiveJournal hates:
http://jimhines.livejournal.com/411247.html

Strike! LJ, You're On Notice!

Thanks to crinklequirk for posting about this.

It seems that LJ is no longer allowing free basic accounts, and they are trying to slip it under the radar. While I understand that they are trying to run a business, it seems that they also have a very obvious contempt for the average LJ User as shown by the interview posted here.

Because of the fact that I am a Basic account user and I would never have come on LJ if I had to pay and the disrespect the owners have for me and others like me, I am going on strike.

Along with (hopefully) thousands of others, I will be on a content strike on Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

How Can I Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO remember that it's based on Greenwich Mean Time, which may not be your local time.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.
DO feel free to friend me for updates, and defriend when the strike is over.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.

Care to join?

New Air Quality Alert

A new Air Quality Alert has been issued for the Twin Cities area.

Here is the message I got in my email:

Subject: Air pollution advisory - southern half of MN (includes Twin Cities)
Date: Mon, February 4, 2008 12:51 pm
To: "AIR POLLUTION ALERT" minnesota-air-alert@lists.state.mn.us
Approved: badskies

February 4, 2008

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Pollution Health Advisory for the southern half of Minnesota for today (Monday), Tuesday and possibly through Wednesday. Air quality is expected to improve as weather conditions bring winds on Wednesday.

Air monitors indicate fine particles are at a level unhealthy for sensitive groups in the Rochester area today. Levels are lower but approaching unhealthy for sensitive groups in the rest of the southern half of the state, including the Twin Cities. Sensitive groups include people with heart or lung disease, children and athletes.

Health precautions: Be prepared to postpone or reduce vigorous activity, even if you are not in the sensitive category. Fine particles can be drawn deeply into the lungs, so reduce activities that lead to deep breathing (indoors and outdoors).

Reduce air pollution: Limit driving; don't idle your vehicle or other engines; turn off as many electric devices to reduce demand on (and pollution from) power plants; postpone unnecessary fires, which add soot particles to the air.

To learn more about air pollution or check hourly updates of the air quality index (AQI), go to the MPCA's AQI Web page: http://aqi.pca.state.mn.us/index.cfm.
Air Quality Alert

Apple's new marketing campaign!

For those of you who've been following it, last week Apple release their latest version of Mac OS X. At about the same time, Comet 17P/Holmes in the constellation Perseus shifted from a magnitude 17 object (visible with a good telescope) to a magnitude 2.5 - 3 (visible with the naked eye).

Could this be a coincidence? You be the judge:

Image from the Bad Astronomy website >>
